Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza- Quick and EASY!

Something that I tried recently with my air fryer is cooking a homemade air fryer tortilla pizza. Now, I understand not everyone will be happy replacing their normal pizza crust with a tortilla.

But, hear me out!

If you want to cut down some calories from a regular crust pizza crust, then replacing it with a tortilla is the best way.

It makes the entire pizza-making process easy, and you get a satisfying, low-carb meal.

This homemade low carb pizza is best for people on a calorie deficit trying to lose weight, making it a healthy alternative.

I think tortillas are best to mimic a thin crust pizza where the crust is almost wafer thin and gives a nice crunch to the pizza.

There are different ways to make this, and I would share both of them below-

Different ways to make air fryer Tortilla Pizza

I have two different ways in my mind to make the tortilla pizza, and you can choose either of them-

1. The first method involves placing the tortilla on the air fryer basket and then layering the pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings on the tortilla and cooking it in an air fryer.

This is a pretty simple way to cook a tortilla pizza.

2. Another way is to cook the tortilla on one side for 2 minutes in the air fryer, flip it, layer it like a pizza, and cook for another few minutes to get a thin-crust pizza.

The difference between the two methods is that in the first one, the tortilla is going to be slightly softer because it wasn’t cooked on the other side, and the second one is going to have a crispy crust.

Why do you need this recipe?

1. Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza is so easy to make- Yes, tortilla pizzas are the easiest among air fryer recipes since you do not need to make your pizza dough from scratch.

Making pizza dough is easy, but if you are short on time, then this homemade tortilla pizza, which is very similar to a thin-crust pizza works well.

2. They cook quickly inside the air fryer. Compared to a regular pizza crust, the tortilla pizza crust cooks relatively quickly.

3. You can utilize your leftover tortillas, veggies, and meat(as toppings) for this recipe, making the most of all the ingredients in your kitchen.

4. This Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza recipe will be everyone’s favorite, and it makes a perfect snack for kids.

How to make Air fryer tortilla Pizza

This recipe calls for three basic ingredients, but it would be better if you added in a fourth.

The three basic ingredients are

-tortillas

-pizza sauce/tomato sauce

– mozzarella cheese

Toppings
The fourth optional yet great ingredient is the toppings of your choice. There are so many different toppings that you can add to a tortilla pizza and customize it according to a person’s taste.

Instructions

1. Place the tortilla in an air fryer and cook it for about 2 minutes at 390°F or 200°C. You can directly do step 2 if you do not want an extra crispy base.

2. Now flip the other side and layer it with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, veggies, or toppings of your choice.

3. Now cook the pizza at 390°F for 3-4 minutes. If you think you want your cheese to be more brown, then cook it for an additional one or two minutes.

Tip– You can even make pizza roll ups or cheese roll-ups with the same ingredients so do give it a try if you are always having a tortilla, cheese and some toppings on hand.

Topping Ideas

Veg topping ideas

Bell Pepper+Cheese(Simple yet so flavourful)

Bell Pepper+white Onion+cheese

Mushroom+Corn+ cheese

Mushroom+Olives+Corn+cheese

You can add or remove some more veggies from the sequences above, like tomatoes, jalapenos, and zucchini.

Meat Toppings

Pepperoni+ cheese

Salami+Pepperoni+cheese

Sausage+ Pepperoni+ White Onion+cheese

Apart from the ones mentioned above, you can add or remove more toppings like BBQ chicken, shredded chicken, bacon, and meatballs, or even mix some veggies in there like Onion, capsicum, corn, or olives, as these go very well with the meat toppings.

How to avoid pizza getting soggy?

If you cook both sides of the tortilla, the chances of getting a soggy pizza are reduced significantly.

However, if you layer your pizza, place it in an air fryer, and cook it as you would in a pizza oven, you might end up with a slightly softer crust.

Another reason why you end up with a soggy crust is because you have used too much pizza sauce on your tortilla pizza.

How to get the pizza crust crispy?

Cooking the tortilla on both sides will give you a guaranteed crispy crust. Just make sure you cook one side for a few minutes in the air fryer, and then flip the tortilla and layer it like a pizza.

Now, cook this tortilla pizza; you will always have a crisp base.

Which is better, corn or flour tortillas?

You can use corn or flour tortillas to make this Air fryer Tortilla Pizza recipe. If you use corn tortillas then this can be a gluten-free recipe.

I have used the flour tortilla for this recipe, but if you use corn tortilla, you might want to cook for a minute longer if the tortilla is thicker to get the base nice and crispy.

storage and freezing

You can store the leftover Air Fryer tortilla pizza slices in an air-tight container inside the refrigerator, and they would last around 3-4 days.

If you plan on freezing it, make sure you wrap each slice separately in aluminum foil or you can even wrap them together and use parchment paper between each slice to separate them so they do not stick together. It becomes easier to reheat them individually.

The frozen pizza slices can last up to 3 months. When you want to reheat a frozen tortilla pizza slice, place it in the air fryer and heat it at 400°F for 3-4 minutes.

IS a Tortilla crust better than a regular pizza crust?

Tortilla pizza crust tastes like a thin crust pizza, which is excellent for someone who doesn’t like the regular pizza crust.

Not just the taste, but it is also a great low carb keto diet that works well for people who are trying to lose weight and stay in a calorie deficiency.

I love a regular pizza crust, so to me tortilla pizza is a great way to use up any of the leftover tortillas, and they make up a great snack when nothing is in the kitchen.

Since they are so easy to make, it helps me save time on those busy work days.

Quick tips for making Air Fryer tortilla pizza

1. Make sure to put some cheese after placing toppings on the tortilla pizza, so the layering should be first pizza sauce, some cheese and then toppings, and finally, a small amount of mozzarella cheese to hold down the toppings.

2. Do not load the tortilla with pizza sauce; it is very thin and can get soggy.

3. Do not preheat the air fryer with just parchment paper inside it. Always place food on top to hold the parchment paper down.

4. Making Air fryer tortilla pizza is a learning curve, so initially, you might want to keep an eye on the pizza while it cooks, and you may need it to cook for an additional one or two minutes, depending on how you like it.

How to serve Tortilla Pizza?

1. Side Salad: A simple salad with fresh vegetables and vinaigrette can complement the pizza and add a refreshing element.

2. Soup: A light soup, such as tomato basil soup or gazpacho, can make for a comforting and warm addition to your meal.

3. Garlic Bread or Breadsticks: Enhance the meal with some garlic bread or breadsticks for a more substantial and satisfying experience.

Notes

1. Do not add a lot of cheese as it will weigh down the tortilla pizza and can make it soggy and greasy)
2. You can use pepperoni or any topping of your liking here, but I prefer to use vegetarian toppings.
3. You do not have to use oil in this recipe as there is no need for spraying oil anywhere. If you want you can spray some oil on the air fryer basket before placing the tortilla but generally it wont stick to the basket so there is no need for it.
