Air Fryer Stuffed Mushrooms- Super Easy to make!

This Air fryer stuffed mushrooms recipe will win your hearts if you want an easy side dish, snack, or party appetizer. It is a fun appetizer for game nights, weekends, movie nights, or an evening snack.

The recipe is super easy and tastes delicious. You can make this in ten minutes; it tastes creamy, juicy, and great.

It is one of my favorite appetizers; the prep time is just 5 minutes. If you have someone to help you, this will be done in 2 minutes; that is how easy it is to prep for this dish.

You can switch ingredients and use crab, shrimp, and chicken add-on along with the cheese in the filling, but the one here has a vegetarian filling.

In this recipe, I have used mushroom stems and cheese to form the filling, taking advantage of the leftover stems that I separated while preparing mushrooms for this recipe.

Ingredients

1. 12 large mushrooms, cleaned and stems removed- You can use any mushrooms you like. Make sure they have a large cap so you can stuff the filling.

Portabella or button mushrooms are the preferred ones, but you are good as long as the mushroom cap is huge and has the curvature to stuff fillings.

2. Grated cheese (for filling)- I have used a nice melty cheese, but you can use cream cheese. Many people have used cream cheese in their stuffed mushroom recipe, which tastes great, but I prefer a little salty cheese.

3. Mozzarella cheese, shredded (for topping)- I love using a bit of mozzarella cheese and topping the stuffed mushrooms. The mozzarella helps create a thin layer on top of the filling and prevents it from going everywhere when cooked in the air fryer.

4. One tablespoon butter- This is to cook and saute the filling. Ensure you cook all the fillings before stuffing them in the mushroom(except cheese).

5. Olive oil spray

6. Optional: Cream cheese and Parmesan cheese (for filling or topping, as desired)

7. Salt (for filling)

8. Pepper

9. Additional Filling- You can mix crab meat filling, chicken, or any other meat with the cream cheese filling. This is completely optional, and you can make a complete vegetarian filling too. Just make sure to chop everything fine and saute it before mixing in the cheese and stuffing in the mushroom.

How to make Air fryer stuffed mushrooms

1. Prepare Mushrooms: Clean the mushrooms and finely chop the removed stems. Set the mushroom caps aside.

2. Sauté Mushroom Stems: Melt butter over medium heat in a pan. Add the chopped mushroom stems, salt, pepper, and sauté until they release moisture and become golden brown. Allow them to cool.

Chopped mushroom stems and a tbsp of butter

You can add other ingredients like chopped chicken, onions, and tomatoes, but make sure they are finely chopped and saute them before using them as a filling.

You can even make a crab meat filling or all cheese filling, which would taste great. You can customize this recipe to your liking.

3. Make the Filling: Combine grated cheese and sautéed mushroom stems in a bowl. Mix well. This will be your filling.

4. Stuff the Mushrooms: Stuff each mushroom cap generously with the cheese and mushroom stem mixture, creating a mound on top.

5. Optional: Cream Cheese and Parmesan: Mix cream cheese and Parmesan into the filling for added richness or use them as toppings. Customize based on your preference.

6. Top with Mozzarella Cheese: Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of each stuffed mushroom, pressing down to create a layer that will brown during cooking and help hold the filling inside.

7. Use Parchment Liner: Line the air fryer basket with a parchment liner to catch melted cheese and prevent a mess.

8. Spray with Olive Oil: Lightly spray the stuffed mushrooms with olive oil. This will help them achieve a golden and crispy texture in the air fryer

9. Arrange in Air Fryer Basket: Place the stuffed mushrooms in the parchment-lined air fryer basket, leaving space between each so that they cook evenly.

10. Air Fry: Set the air fryer temperature to 180°C (360°F) and cook for 10 minutes. Check them halfway through the cooking time and adjust if necessary.

11. Serve: Once the stuffed mushrooms are golden brown and cooked through, remove them from the air fryer. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving.

What mushrooms should I use?

When making stuffed mushrooms, it’s best to use larger mushroom varieties that provide a substantial base for the filling.

You can use Cremini Mushrooms (also known as Baby Bella Mushrooms), White Button Mushrooms(I have used this kind in this recipe) and Portobello Mushrooms.

For this recipe, the bigger the better.

How to avoid Soggy Mushrooms while cooking stuffed mushrooms

Make sure you don’t cook the mushrooms for too long. When you cook them too long, they release a lot of water and become soggy.

After you wash the mushrooms, make sure that you dab them dry with a kitchen towel to remove excess water, as mushrooms absorb water. We want to dry them so that when you cook the stuffed mushrooms, they don’t get too soggy.

How long to cook stuffed mushrooms in air fryer?

You can cook the mushrooms for 8 minutes, and when you see a bit of browning on the outside of the mushroom, you can be sure it is cooked.

I would highly recommend leaving it for at least 8 minutes, but for the perfect cook, it would be nice to cook it for 8-10 minutes to get the perfectly cooked mushroom.

Tips on making Air fryer Stuffed Mushrooms

1. Clean the mushrooms by rinsing them briefly under cool running water to remove dirt or debris. After rinsing, gently pat them dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Wiping the mushrooms ensures they absorb no excess water, helping to maintain their natural texture and preventing them from becoming waterlogged during cooking.

2. Remove Stems Carefully: Remove the stems, gently twisting and pulling them out. This can be tricky; make sure not to tear the mushroom cap.

3. Line with Parchment Paper: Line the air fryer basket or baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the cheese from sticking and making cleanup easier.

4. Customize the Filling: Get creative with the filling. Use a mixture of grated melty cheese, sautéed mushroom stems, and optional ingredients like cream cheese or Parmesan for added richness.

5. Keep an Eye on Cooking Time: Check the stuffed mushrooms halfway through the cooking time to ensure they cook evenly. Adjust the time if needed.

Equipment

  • 1 Philips Air fryer

Ingredients

  • 12 pieces Mushrooms
  • 1/2 Cup Cheese(any cheese that melts)
  • 1/2 Cup Mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • Any additional Toppings(Optional)

Instructions

  • Clean the mushrooms and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.
  • Separate the stems from the caps and ensure that you do not break any of the caps in the process.
  • Finely chop all the mushroom stems. Take a pan and add 1/2 tbsp of butter, salt, and pepper, and cook it till the mixture is golden brown. Take this and mix it with the melty cheese and stir it till it forms a paste. This paste is going to be the filling.
  • Fill all the mushroom caps with the filling made above.
  • Press some mozzarella cheese on top of the filling, and your prep is done.
  • Line the air fryer basket with some parchment paper and place all the mushrooms on top of it. Leave some gap between each of the mushroom caps.
  • Cook this at 180°C for 8-10 minutes. Your stuffed mushroom is ready. Enjoy!!!

Notes

1. You can use any cheese filling inside the stuffed mushrooms. You can combine cream cheese and parmesan or cream cheese + grated cheddar cheese. Anything cheese that melts would be a perfect add-on for the filling.
2. Add any meat or veggies you like in the stuffing. I like to make a simple stuffing as there is not a lot of space in the mushroom to fill up, but if you are making it in large batches, then go ahead and add some crab meat, chicken, or anything of your choice in the filling to make it to your liking.
3. You can spray some olive oil on top of the mushrooms; it helps to avoid mushrooms from going too soggy.
4. Please use a parchment liner in the air fryer basket, this recipe can get messy.
