Air Fryer Sausage, Peppers, and Onions

If you are looking for a quick and easy side dish, then this air fryer sausage, peppers, and onions is here to your rescue.

You can make this easy and wonderful recipe in the air fryer in a few minutes and serve it with some rice or bread or even add it to pasta and ramen.

This is one of the best recipes out there, as I like to make it for breakfast and eat it on the side with my omelet. Cooking this is so easy.

You can also make this in bulk, store it in the fridge, and use it as a side to complete your meals. Even though this has veggies, it tastes so good with the caramelized onions, sausages, and bell peppers.

This is one of my favorite combos, and you can even use this to top your pizza and make a nice sausage pizza for yourself.

So, without wasting any more time, let’s make one of the best air fryer sausages, onions, and bell peppers.

Why make this recipe

1. Low Carb & Healthy: This dish is a nutritious choice with minimal carbs and the health benefits of bell peppers and onions.

2. Quick & Easy: Air frying makes cooking this recipe easy, quick, and perfect for busy mornings or weeknight dinners.

3. Versatile Side Dish: Whether you eat it with breakfast or serve it as a main course, it’s a flavorful addition to any meal.

4. Multi-Purpose: Use this recipe in various dishes like omelets, sandwiches, or salads for added convenience and taste.

Ingredients

2 sausages, chopped- You can use any sausage of your liking, and there is no particular sausage that I recommend. As long as you like the sausage, this recipe would work.

1/2 large onion, thickly sliced—Make sure you slice the onion into thick pieces as if you slice it in thin pieces, it can easily burn inside the air fryer.

1 large bell pepper, thickly sliced- The same follows for the bell peppers when it comes to cutting them into slices. Make sure to cut them into thick slices before you start cooking them in the air fryer. You can use any color of bell pepper that you like and enjoy your cooking.

1 tablespoon olive oil- This is important so you do not burn your veggies in the air fryer.

Salt and pepper, to taste (approximately 1/4 teaspoon each)

Optional: additional seasonings of your choice

How to make Air fryer sausage peppers and onions

1. Preparation of the veggies and sausages: Chop the sausages, onion, and bell pepper into thick slices or chunks.

You can Preheat your air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for about 3-5 minutes, but this step is optional, and I did not preheat my air fryer while making this recipe.
Remember, if you preheat the air fryer, the cooking times will decrease by a few minutes, so cook accordingly.

2. Mixing: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped sausages, onions, and bell peppers.
At this step, drizzle the olive oil on the sausage and veggies and season with salt, pepper, or any other additional seasonings you prefer. Toss well to coat everything evenly.

3. Arranging in the Pan: Transfer the seasoned sausage, onion, and bell pepper mixture into a metal pan that fits easily inside your air fryer basket and is air fryer-safe or oven-safe.
All oven-safe utensils work well in the air fryer if they fit the air fryer basket. Spread them out in an even layer.

4. Cooking: Place the pan with the mixture into the preheated air fryer. Cook at 190°C (375°F) for 10 minutes. Remember to stir the mixture halfway through the cooking process to ensure even cooking.

5. Checking for Doneness: After 10 minutes, check whether the sausages are cooked and the vegetables are tender. If needed, cook for a few minutes until the desired doneness is achieved.

After 9-10 minutes of cooking

6. Serving: Once cooked, remove the pan from the air fryer and serve the sausage, onions, and bell peppers hot as a delicious side dish or main course.

Tips on making air fryer sausage peppers and onions

1. Cut Vegetables Thick: To prevent burning, cut the onions and bell peppers into thick slices or chunks. This ensures they cook evenly without becoming overly charred.

2. Use Oil to Prevent Burning: Due to their high sugar content, onions are prone to burning in the air fryer. Toss the vegetables with a light oil coating before air frying to avoid this. This helps to cook everything evenly and prevents the onions and sausages from sticking to the air fryer basket.

3. Seasonings: Don’t be afraid to try different seasonings to enhance the flavor of your dish. Whether it’s simple salt and pepper, Italian herbs, Cajun seasoning, or garlic powder, adding your favorite seasonings can improve the taste of the sausage, peppers, and onions.

4. Customize with Additional Ingredients: You can add more ingredients to your dish to create your unique combination. For added flavor and variety, consider adding other vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, or cherry tomatoes. You can also mix in different types of meat, such as chicken sausage or diced bacon, to create your blend.

5. Use Air Fryer-Safe Utensils: When cooking in the air fryer, use utensils that are safe for use with air fryers. You can also use silicone basket liners to cook this recipe.

How to serve

1. Over Rice: Spoon the cooked sausage, onions, and bell peppers over a bed of fluffy rice for a hearty and satisfying meal. The flavorful mixture pairs well with both white and brown rice varieties.

2. In Ramen: Add the sausage, onions, and bell peppers to a steaming bowl of ramen noodles for a tasty twist on this classic dish. The savory flavors perfectly complement the rich broth and noodles.

3. In Pasta: Toss the cooked sausage, onions, and bell peppers with cooked pasta and your favorite sauce for a delicious pasta dish. Whether it’s marinara, Alfredo, or pesto, the combination of flavors is sure to impress.

4. In a Hotdog: Sausage, onions, and bell peppers make a flavorful topping for grilled hotdogs. Place the cooked mixture on top of the hotdog in a bun and add your favorite condiments for a delicious and satisfying meal.

5. Over a Burger: Pile the sausage, onions, and bell peppers on top of a juicy burger for an extra flavor. Whether you’re grilling up beef, turkey, or veggie burgers, this tasty topping will take them to the next level.

Storage and Reheating

Storage:

1. In the Fridge: Transfer the cooked sausage, onions, and bell peppers into an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag.

Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Any container that seals tightly will work well for short-term storage in the fridge.

2. In the Freezer: For longer-term storage, use a microwave-safe airtight container to store the cooked mixture in the freezer.

Make sure to leave some space at the top of the container to allow for expansion as the food freezes.

Properly stored, sausage, onions, and bell peppers can last in the freezer for up to 2-3 months without significant loss of quality.

Reheating:

1. From the Fridge: To reheat the sausage, onions, and bell peppers from the fridge, simply transfer the desired amount to a microwave-safe dish. Microwave for 2 min at 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until heated through to your desired temperature.

2. From the Freezer: When reheating from the freezer, it’s best to thaw the mixture overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Once thawed, follow the same reheating instructions as for leftovers from the fridge.

Alternatively, you can reheat the frozen mixture directly from the freezer by placing it in a microwave-safe dish, covering it with a microwave-safe lid or plastic wrap, and microwaving on a defrost or low-power setting until thawed, then continue reheating as described above.
